Shane Brady

"When a woman was giving birth in the late nineteen-fifties, the man had to wait outside somewhere..in the pub or the cinema or whatever. Willie went to see Alan Ladd´s movie "Shane" and so I got the name…….

He wanted to give us all Irish names : Fiona, Shane, Emer, Gráinne and Liam. I´m glad he did´nt go to see "Zorro" or "Attack Of The Crab Monsters"……

Musically, my week would be a mixture of Irish ballads ( from Willie and all at home ), modern "Liedgut" like Schubert´s "The Trout" ( from my singing teacher B.Walsh ) "She Loves You" (from the Beatles) and Handel´ s "Halleluja Chorus" (from the Palestrina Choir, Dublin).

I sang at weddings every Saturday and later, at thirteen, nearly every night at Jury´s Irish Cabaret. I was also taking part in events like the Feiseanna Ceoil, the music and singing competitions for young people that are still going strong today.

Though I´ve written manys´ the song for myself as well as for other artists and T.V. shows and serials´ my own personal output on the CD front has been pretty thin. I have been working a lot as a studio singer and guitarist for lots of artist´s projects. ´92 saw the release of "The Living Room", a self produced CD distributed by Aris / Ariola. In 1997 a six-track CD "The Beginning Of The End" (what a title..) was released under the administration of Warner / Chappell. In the meantime I had been playing live all the time. We also toured twice in Ireland, which was a great experience, (thanks to our tour - manager Derek Dunne ! ) Highlights included going out to support Rory Gallagher in Freiburg at the ZMF, a big festival here in Freiburg in ´93. The first record I ever bought was "Taste: Live At The Isle Of Wight" featuring of course Rory G; so that was an honour… I also played support to Mary Coughlan and to Christy Moore. I was surprised at how much Christy knew about my father. He remembered exactly the F-hole Hofner guitar Willie played and mentioned his pioneering role in the Fifties, playing guitar to the old Irish songs.

And now here I am doing those old songs, many of which were long forgotten.

I love how the CD sounds ( thanks here also to Rob Sharer ) and now after some great shows featuring the Breen family from Clare and other fine musicians ( eight in all on stage..), I can see that there is a nice and a unique concept there that, with a little T.L.C., will most likely grow to give enjoyment and touch a very wide audience. When my father died I was eleven and he was thirty-eight, so maybe its time now to carry on where he left off………….
